시간 (Time)

6 Nov

Δε γνώριζα την ύπαρξη του Time.

The Fountain

21 Mar
Xibalba. Her vision. Her conquistador. Immortality pitted against mortality. Egoism and acceptance. Struggle and fulfillment. The first man. A world reborn. A book to be complete. A person’s life to end. Which is the most appropriate ending? How to finish it? What gift does the Tree of Life bring? Forget me not. Death is the road to awe

The Illusionist

21 Jan

Let me introduce myself. I am Eisenheim. The Illusionist. And this… is my story. I grew up wanting to be someone special, for myself, for her. But everywhere and everytime, we were not meant to be together. Obstacles, in many shapes and forms… One of them, the greatest for me to overcome. Now, I want to master all kinds of magic. Step up if you please, give me a handkerchief. And thus, I shall begin. Watch as the orange tree grows and the magic unfurls. How my story unfolds. How my love’s still strong. Please, please, calm down. My intention surely is not to be accused of fraud. So keep in mind… Everything you will see here. It’s a trick… It’s an illusion…

Already out on DVD in the US, soon to be released in the UK, a masterful movie, with stunning visuals and mesmerizing performances. Highly, highly recommended. For more info visit IMDB’s entry. Beware of spoilers.

Stranger than Fiction

12 Jan

When Harold Crick woke up that Wednesday morning, everything followed the same mundane routine. Then, suddenly, his wristwatch decided to play a trick on him. Little did he know, that he was about to…

This, is the story of two, no three, nope, I think it is the story of a lot of people. But mostly three. Or maybe more. To figure out who’s important and who’s not, you’ll have to watch the movie yourselves and do that to the very end.

Emma Thompson excels in her neurotic writer role, Will Ferrell is a delightful regular Joe with no special “powers”, other than “skill with numbers”, Maggie Gyllenhaal is as sweet as her baked goods and Dustin Hoffman remains calm throughout this surreal dramedy.

Yes, dramedy. A drama inside a comedy. A comedy inside a drama. A story most, if not all of us, can relate to, a wonderfully written tale by Zach Helm, who shouts to the audience to never give up and live our life to the fullest.

Cliche? Maybe. But it is one of the best movies I’ve seen the past few years and it touched me in more ways than any other film.

Do we honestly know what the light of day will bring forth to us tomorrow? Little do we know…

Pan’s Labyrinth

11 Dec

Spain, 1944, in a fascist regime, at the time of Franco’s Resistance, when this fairy tale begins to unravel. A young girl accompanies her mother to a military outpost where her step-father is captain and a most foul man. Soon, she’ll follow a strange creature to a labyrinth, where a faun tells her she’s not a mere mortal, but in fact the reincarnation of a princess to the Underworld’s kingdom.

With magnificent story-telling and a gorgeous cinematography by Guillermo Navarro, you’ll hardly forget Guillermo del Toro’s movie. The film was nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes and got a 22 minute ovation from the audience. It’s score, an incredible 8.4 on IMBD.

So come this way if you please… Enter the labyrinth

Just beware: Fairy tales are not always meant for children…

Taxidermia

23 Nov

I was so excited and anxious all at once. I felt my blood pumping and as little hair as I now have on my head falling, it was my first night… My inauguration night to this year’s Thessaloniki International Film Festival and I had invited both Nassia and Chris from school. I told them they shouldn’t miss this movie…

First time I saw Taxidermia vaguely referenced was last year on Twitch. The site which is dedicated to the bizarre and off-shore films. Back then it was just a mock-up poster and some words about it and György Pálfi, the Hungarian director behind previous “hit” Hukkle. Later came the trailer

What I did mention to both my friends was that the movie had a plot that went like that:
Three generations of men, the grandfather, the father, and the son, each one… unique. You have to come with me! There will be taxidermy, fast eating competitions and… flaming penises! Would YOU miss out on this freak show? I won them over, they came and we rushed to find good seats. The movie began that very moment and it played out like a script in three stages, each dedicated to one of the men.

The grandfather is a hare-lipped soldier serving a bully lieutenant, who… “graced” us with his penis, which came out spurting fire. Staying in a shack in the cold of winter, he day- (and night) dreams of potential sexual intercourse with one of the females living in the nearby house. Not to ruin your own entertainment, I’ll suffice to say that during this segment there is bestiality, graphic scenes of sex (see Nassia? Porn!! Who needs porn when he has Taxidermia!), pigslaughter and violence.

His son, born with a curly pig’s tail, is an obese man competing in fast eating in communist Hungary. Brace your seats cause you’re in for some nasty images of fat, disgusting vomit. He’s also competing for the heart of an obese woman, a champion in competitions of the same sort. By now, it wasn’t just the tail that was curled (it was cut don’t worry), I saw Nassia curled up to the side trying to force herself to continue watching this… “stupidity“.

And last, the “athlete’s” son, who’s everything unlike his father. Deadly skinny, he is a professional taxidermist (rejoice everyone! this segment wraps the story and binds everything together… if you know what I mean…) providing his father, now a monstrous blob unable to walk, reminding me of Jabba the Hutt from the Star Wars legend, with endless amounts of chocolate eaten with their wrappers… He also buys margarine to feed some gigantic cats his father wants to someday train for eating… This part is where the real fun begins, mutilation, entrails galore, taxidermy… And chocolate wrappers lest we forget!

As a whole, I enjoyed this film. I screamed “yuck” in more than one scenes and a lady next to Chris held her eyes closed for the better part of the third segment. Nassia was looking at me with evil scornful eyes saying “you owe me big time“… I guess you can all deduce who liked it. What I kept saying was “The cinematography is great!” and all I got as responses was a grunt… Oh well, if you are willing to watch this try to control your gag reflexes and get ready to laugh your heart out, avert your eyes in pain and disgust and wonder… What was this film’s message?

Children of Men

13 Nov

A dystopian thriller set in 2027, directed by Alfonso Cuaron and starring Clive Owen, a movie about lost and regained hope, conflict and rejoicing, with an awfully loose script (changing a lot of things from the novel by P.D. James it was based on) that CAN touch your heart -once you forget the stupid plot and can supress your anxiety- in the most gloomy of ways…

Scored 8.0/10 on IMDB and 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.

BORAT!

11 Nov

Jagshemash!

British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (of Da Ali G Show) made up this Kazakhstani character of a misogynistic, anti-Semitic journalist, travelling across the USA, his ultimate goal to have “sexy time” with a special someone, while on his trip unsuspecting Americans express their views of the world and the war in Iraq and try to teach him the American way, so as Borat completes his “cultural learnings”, which make the viewers either laugh their hearts out, boo him, or cringe at times…

Overall a fun movie to watch (if you can get past some of the jokes people might think offensive), way better than Ali G In Da House. The third character from Da Ali G Show is about to have a movie as well. Waiting for Bruno then…

The movie scored a whopping 92% on Rotten Tomatoes! Visit its official site HERE!

BRICK

23 Oct

Movie review in one paragraph:

Film noir set in the 00s, with technicolor and high school kids speaking like exact counterparts of their 30s and 40s ancestral characters (the girl victim, the detective with the brainy sidekick, the Kingpin, the diva with her lapdog, the cunniving woman, the mindless muscle and the crazy snitch – you most certainly will need an urban dictionary), undecided yet whether it’s hilarious, or intriguingly mysterious, but certainly worth a watch.

Out on DVD for Region 1 and 2, a new (as of 19th October) theatre release in Greece (only Athens’ screenings for the time being). Official site HERE.
